Kyler Gerardy is the emergency QB tonight

It goes Brendan Sullivan, Jackson Stratton and walk-on freshman Kyle Gerardy as Iowa’s QB hierarchy tonight. Gerardy was committed to North Dakota State as a safety before walking on at Iowa. He threw for 1,300 yards as a dual-threat QB at North Scott last season.

Luke Lachey is dressed and going through warmups, but availability is still in question

Lachey is dressed and going through warmups as we close in on an hour until kickoff. Left quad area is significantly wrapped. We’ll see how much Lachey actually gets on the field tonight, though.

Iowa’s availability report is out

  • OUT: John Nestor, Marco Lainez, Cade McNamara, Reece Vander Zee, Addison Ostrenga.
  • QUESTIONABLE: Luke Lachey

All those ruled out are expected per Kirk Ferentz earlier in the week and Hawk Central reporting. The questionable diagnosis on Lachey is still a lean towards out.

Two noteworthy injury updates for the Hawkeyes

We’ll get the official Iowa injury report here soon, but our Chad Leistikow is reporting the Hawkeyes will be down two notable pieces Saturday night.

First, star tight end Luke Lachey is expected to be OUT against the Badgers but could return next Friday at UCLA, multiple sources confirmed. It’s the quad injury Lachey suffered against Northwestern that’s continuing to linger. As a result, Zach Ortwerth will start at tight end. Expect to see Johnny Pascuzzi, Hayden Large and Andrew Lentsch as well to provide depth.

Additionally, Iowa’s QB depth continues to thin. Already down Cade McNamara with a concussion, the Hawkeyes will be without backup Marco Lainez after he broke his left thumb at practice Monday. Lainez has already had surgery and is expected to miss the rest of the regular season. A bowl-game return is possible.

What does that mean? Jackson Stratton, who Iowa acquired this offseason with little fanfare, is the official backup to Brendan Sullivan tonight. Hard to not see that situation affecting Sullivan’s running decisions.

Iowa vs. Wisconsin predictions

From our Chad Leistikow: Prediction: Iowa 24, Wisconsin 17 … The Hawkeyes’ veteran defense is feeling the urgency and has the pieces and firepower to overwhelm a familiar foe. Castro is going to have a big game, and as long as Sullivan protects the football and succeeds in the red zone, Iowa will be well-positioned to win its third straight against Wisconsin for the first time since taking four in a row from 2002 through 2005.
