Islands High School duo signs to play college baseball

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) – Two seniors at Islands High School checked off another box in their athletic careers on Thursday when they signed to play baseball at the next level.

Dylan Gordon is a catcher for the Sharks, and signed to play at Gordon State (Barnesville, GA). His classmate, teammate, and friend also put pen to paper. Brendan Lanigan is heading to Cocoa Beach to pitch for Eastern Florida State (Cocoa, FL).

“I’ve worked hard for this and I’ve waited for this day for a very long time,” Lanigan said just before signing. “It’s been a lot of hard work, a lot of up and down, but at this point it’s definitely a high so I’m very excited for this.”

“(Signing to college) definitely does take a little bit of load off,” Gordon added. “Makes it so you can play a comfortable season, not having to worry about any commitments or anything so you can have a fun senior year.”

The signing was a little more meaningful for the Islands duo. Dylan and Brendan have been sharing the same jersey since 7th grade, and talked about signing to play in college at the same time for years. That became a reality on Thursday.

“It means a lot,” said Gordon. “Me and Lanigan have been together for forever really. From 7th grade we’ve been playing baseball together. We work out, throw hit, everything we need to do to get ready for a season and college ball now. It really means a lot for us to do this at the same time.”

National Signing Day is scheduled for Wednesday, February 5th. If you or someone you know is planning to have a ceremony, please reach out to the WTOC sports team — Jeff.Roberts@WTOC.com and Rachel.West@WTOC.com.
