WASHINGTON (Gray DC) – Vice President JD Vance dropped the College Football Playoff’s national championship trophy on Monday afternoon while the Ohio State Buckeyes were visiting the White House to celebrate their January win.
The fumble happened when the vice president tried to pick up the trophy at the end of a ceremony that was held to honor the team. As he grabbed the trophy off of a display table, it appeared to split in two, with the top part falling backward, and the base falling to the floor.
Vance is a former Ohio senator and Ohio State alumni.
Vance later joked about the tumble on X, writing, “I didn’t want anyone after Ohio State to get the trophy so I decided to break it.”
The team was invited to the White House after winning the College Football Playoff, 34-23 over Notre Dame.
