Jedd Fisch goes in depth on Washington Football’s tumultuous 2024 season

Jedd Fisch was given a near-impossible task during his first season at the helm with the Washington Huskies.

Not only did he have to take over a team that played in the national championship just six days earlier and replace 44 players on the roster that departed for the NFL draft, transfer portal, or via graduation, but he also had to do it in a new conference as the Huskies transitioned to the Big Ten.

That’s without mentioning that the Huskies had to go on the road to play three teams that qualified for the first year of the 12-team College Football Playoff.

In an appearance on the Jim Rome Show, Fisch discussed the challenges of his first season.

“I don’t think it’s replicable,” Fisch said. “I don’t know anybody with one returning starter on their football team. I can’t think of a time when that’s ever happened. We were grabbing guys from everywhere. We had three guys who were in the FCS that were starting on our offensive line who didn’t arrive until June. We went through a veteran quarterback, and then we had a true freshman quarterback. I think the rebuild was huge.”

Even with a large crop of new players on the roster ahead of the 2025 season, Fisch believes that the season will have a different look as he’s continued to establish his culture in Seattle.

“I feel a lot better about this year’s team,” he continued. “We have 58 returning players from a year ago and 28 high school kids, so 86 out of our 105 players, we’re a lot more familiar with that group. We also brought in 18 transfers, four of those are from our time at Arizona, so combined, we’ve got a much better team of guys who know what we expect, what we want to do, we’re healthy, and we’re in a good spot.”
