The Huskies take the field tomorrow, April 1st, at 3:30 pm for the first of 15 spring practices, all but one of which is open to the public. Here are some notes from what head coach Jedd Fisch had to say when he met with the media prior to the kickoff of spring football…
- Said there’s a lot of excitement in the air regarding the team, the players and the new staff as well as recruiting and college football in general.
- Hopeful for some “solutions” here soon.
- Said the team is healthy going into practice. Only players not able to participate are Jayvon Parker, Zach Durfee, Deuce Davis, Denzel Boston, Ephesians Prysock and Zaydrius Rainey-Sale. If they have had surgery they won’t be able to participate. Also noted that Charlie Crowell will be limited.
- Rainey-Sale is coming back from an ACL tear he suffered in high school.
- Said the players would be working through things on the side or with the training staff.
- Boston and Prysock were clean up they had to do on them after the season.
- The run game and the QB development rely on the offensive line being much better.
- Noted all of the second year and fourth year players being in college and how they will be improved.
- Said they aren’t going to run Jonah Coleman into the ground during the spring.
- Said that Dash Beierly and Treston Kini McMillan will have the availability of having an offensive line because they can run a second team session on the field instead of just one.
- Will let Carver Willis, Drew Azzopardi and Maximus McCree battle for the two starting tackle spots. No determination on who will play where right now.
- Talked about the nutrition and strength staff and the work they’ve done with the players this offseason.
- Said Coleman knows this is his final season of college football and he knows this is his chance to have his biggest and best year and that’s why he’s attacked the weight room and nutrition side of things this offseason.
- Said the team is faster than they were at this time last year, not only because of who they recruited but also because of how they’ve trained this offseason.
- Said that Landen Hatchett, Geirean Hatchett and Zach Henning as the top three centers and then Champ Taulealea and Davit Boyajyan are learning center as well.
- Said Demond Williams‘ goal was to hit 200 by spring football and he was 198 as of yesterday’s weigh in. Said he played last season at 180, so he has packed on some bulk and strength.
- Noted that Adam Mohammed is a specimen and that Jordan Washington has added 21 pounds since he arrived last year. Also said that Durfee has made a lot of strides in the weight room.
- Won’t be in pads the first two practices due to NCAA regulations, but hopes to be in full pads 11 of the 13 other practices.
- Said Tulane transfer Kai Horton will get a majority of the second team reps.
- Said nothing is etched in stone anymore in college football when asked about the 85-man roster limit. He also noted that sometime this month there should be more clarity in the settlement from the lawsuit with the NCAA and if there are any roster caps in place. He said he expects Washington to be at the 85-man limit.
