While there’s been talk about if Quinn Ewers can get it done or not, Johnny Manziel trusts the Texas QB the most of the remaining signal callers in the College Football Playoff.
Will Howard (Ohio State), Riley Leonard (Notre Dame) and Drew Allar (Penn State) are the other three in the semifinals. Granted, Manziel gave his answer on Ewers based on if the national title game went to overtime.
But the sentiment is the same, saying he wants the ball in Ewers’ hands with the game on the line.
“I think I’d rather take Quinn, with the way he played and some of those clutch moments against Arizona State,” Manziel said, via Action Network. “The guy has been to back to back college football playoffs that they’ve had. He’s been in big games. He’s been in big moments.
“If you remember last year in the Washington game, they’re really 1 or 2 plays away at the end of that game from maybe winning that, getting to the national title. I would trust Quinn the most here, with the guys who are remaining.”
Nothing proved it more than Ewers firing a fourth down touchdown pass in overtime against Arizona State. With the game on the line, as referenced above, the Texas QB extended the game and the Longhorns ended up winning to advance to the semifinals.
Ewers was asked about earning the trust of the staff and team around him to pilot Texas to success on offense. He recalled the first time he was handed that responsibility.
“Well, I can tell you my first fall camp here, obviously, I was battling with Hudson Card to earn the starting job,” Ewers said, via Inside Texas. “And then towards the end of that, Sark and me had a good conversation where he pretty much told me that it’s my job. I think that was a big step for me, obviously, because it makes things a whole lot easier whenever you do know that you’re going to be the quarterback, especially the starter. It just helped my confidence, for sure.
“That year, there were definitely some ups and downs going on with the injury. We came out the first quarter against Alabama in 2022, and we were rolling as an offense. I feel like that, obviously, helped build confidence in me and then everybody around me. From then on out, it’s kind of just built on from then.”
Ewers and Texas take on Howard and Ohio State Friday in the Cotton Bowl while Leonard and Notre Dame take on Allar and Penn State Thursday in the Orange Bowl.
