Joson Sanon withdraws from NBA Draft, will play sophomore year at St. John’s

After dipping his toe into the NBA draft waters and receiving feedback from scouts and teams, Joson Sanon officially decided to return to college basketball for his sophomore year and play at St. John’s ahead of Wednesday’s early entrant withdrawal deadline. Jon Rothstein first reported the news.

The 6-foot-5 guard was the first transfer portal acquisition of this offseason for St. John’s, joining the Red Storm after an encouraging freshman campaign at Arizona State and declaring for the draft in the process.

Earlier this month, Sanon declined an invitation to the NBA G-League Elite Camp, instead undergoing team workouts with teams like the Washington Wizards and the Boston Celtics, but unsurprisingly will come back for a second season of college basketball in hopes of increasing his stock for the 2026 draft and competing for a national championship with a Red Storm squad that is expected to a preseason top-five team.

Playing in 27 games and making nine starts as a freshman at Arizona State, Sanon averaged 11.9 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 1.0 assists while shooting 42.2% from the floor and 36.9% from three. The top-25 recruit from the class of 2024 closed out his first year on a high note, averaging 18.8 points and 4.8 rebounds in his last five games for the Sun Devils.
