KANSAS City, Mo. — The long ball was at a premium for the Kansas Jayhawks in Minneapolis on Wednesday afternoon.
The Jayhawks tied an NCAA record with five consecutive home runs en route to a 29-1 obliteration over the University of Minnesota. They are also the first Big 12 team to accomplish the feat.
Kansas is the first team since South Carolina in 2006 to hit five consecutive homers and the fourth in NCAA Division I history. Eastern Illinois (1998) and Centenary (1992) are the other two.
Infielder Chase Diggins got the party started in the third inning with a three-run homer to go up 10-1. C Max Soliz Jr., infielder Brady Counsell, infielder Brady Ballinger and DH Jackson Hauge all followed up that up with solo home runs to take a commanding 13-1 lead.
Diggins and Hauge both finished with two home runs. Diggins hit a grand slam in the fifth inning to make it 20-1.
Right-handed pitcher Kannon Carr (2-0) notched the win. Kansas now sits at 15-2 with a three-game series at home against Baylor, starting on Friday at 6 p.m.
