Kentucky rumored to possibly face UConn or St. John’s in the CBS Sports Classic

The CBS Sports Classic could have a new team in the 2025 season, and the Kentucky Wildcats could have a new opponent.

According to KSR’s Matt Jones, “there is some chatter around Lexington” that one school could be removing itself from the yearly tournament. Jones adds that two teams that could possibly replace the team in question could be UConn or St. John’s. Whichever team fills the void will be the Wildcats’ new opponent this season.

The Wildcats have been involved in the CBS Sports Classic since 2014. The annual tournament consists of Kentucky, UCLA, UNC, and Ohio State. The Wildcats are 5-6 all-time in this tournament.

The Classic’s contract was renewed in 2022 through 2026. The site for the next 2 seasons has not yet been released, but Jones adds this year’s rendition will be played in Atlanta.

Replacing UCLA in the Champions Classic with either UConn or St. John’s would add to the Wildcats’ demanding non-conference schedule. If the Wildcats face the Red Storm in Atlanta, Mark Pope could face off against his former coach at Kentucky, Rick Pitino. The Wildcats have not faced UConn since 2014 in the national championship game.

Pope and Kentucky could see a new opponent on the schedule this upcoming season.
