The Keuka College Baseball team lost a pair of Empire 8 Conference games at Russell Sage College on Monday afternoon.
Keuka College (9-13, 3-8 Empire 8) lost the opener 10-2 to the Gators. Sage then defeated the Wolves 8-4 in game two.
Russell Sage College 10 vs. Keuka College 2 – Game 1
The Wolves took the lead in the first inning as Alex Evans (Liverpool, N.Y. / Liverpool) singled and moved to second on a passed ball. He then scored on a two-out single by Derek Novicki (North Haven, Conn. / North Haven). Novicki moved to second on the play and then he came home on another two-out single, this time by Carlos Fantauzzi (Canandaigua, N.Y. / Canandaigua Academy).
The lead would be short-lived, however, as Russell Sage got a two-out, two-run double to tie the game. A Keuka College error followed to allow another run as the Gators led 3-2.
The Gators added to their lead with a run in the second and then three in the third. The hosts put it away in the sixth with three insurance runs as Russell Sage defeated Keuka College 10-2.
Russell Sage College 8 vs. Keuka College 4 – Game 2
Keuka College again took the lead in the first inning. With two outs, Kyle Wood (Newark, N.Y. / Newark) singled and stole second. He then scored on an RBI single by Derek Novicki.
Much like game one, however, Russell Sage had an answer. They scored five in the bottom of the first and added two in the second and one in the fourth to build an 8-2 lead over the Wolves.
The Wolves pulled one back in the sixth. Carlos Fantauzzi doubled for the Green and Gold. Kole Schmerder (Vestal, N.Y. / Vestal) followed with a single to score Fantauzzi to make it 8-2.
That score held until the ninth. Donald Nemeth (Guilderland, N.Y. / Guilderland) pinch hit to lead off the inning for Keuka and delivered a single in his first at-bat of the season. After a popout, Zach Keck (De Soto, Mo. / De Soto) singled, moving pinch runner Jay Antinore (Batavia, N.Y. / Batavia Notre Dame) to third base. HE scored on a groundout by Alex Evans. Ian Ruhmel (Horseheads, N.Y. / Horseheads) then followed with an RBI single to cut the margin to 8-4. The Wolves would get the tying run to the on-deck circle following an error, but that would be as close as Keuka would cut it. A groundout ended the game with Russell Sage winning 8-4.
Keuka Notes:

- Hunter Corkran (North Syracuse, N.Y. / Cicero-North Syracuse) threw four innings of hitless relief for the Wolves to finish up game two
