Tamar Bates and Caleb Grill have been balling out in the pre-draft process.
Both guys got an invite to the G League Elite Camp over the weekend. Both guys played pretty well — Bates had 19 points in his first game and nine in his second, while Grill had nine points in his first game and 19 in his second.
Bates did well enough to earn a call-up to the NBA Draft Combine, unofficially making him one of the top 75 guys in this year’s class. He measured in at 6-foot-5 with a 6-foot-10 wingspan (NBA teams LOVE a “plus” wingspan). In shooting drills, he made 68.4% of all his attempts (for reference, that’s the same percentage made by Texas freshman guard Tre Johnson, who’s likely to be picked in the top 10 this year). He had three points, one rebound and one steal in his first scrimmage on Wednesday and will play again Thursday afternoon. NBADraft.net has Bates going to the Memphis Grizzlies in the second round with the 48th pick in their most recent mock draft (this isn’t a site I typically go to for draft info, but it is the first time I’ve seen an outlet consider him getting selected).
