The Red Sox could make an infield move, which could lead to a top prospect’s call-up.
Boston “introduced” Kristian Campbell to first base Friday. Manager Alex Cora noted the process could take weeks or months, but Campbell is willing to do what it takes to help the club.
According to Cora, Campbell’s process has nothing to do with Rafael Devers. But it could lead to Marcelo Mayer’s ascension to the big league club.
Mayer ideally would slot in at second base, with David Hamilton continuing his role as back middle infielder. Mayer primarily played shortstop in his minor league career. However, has experience at second base and third base, positions he also played for Boston during spring training. He played second base for Triple-A Worcester on Friday, so the organization does seem to be trying to get him used to the position.
Hamilton is a serviceable fielder, and his speed his valuable to the Red Sox. However, Mayer’s batting production could give Boston the boost it needs. The consensus No. 2 prospect in Boston’s farm system leads Triple-A Worcester with eight home runs in 38 games. He also had a team-high 39 RBIs and his ability in the clutch would be extremely valuable to a Boston team that hasn’t fared well in one-run games.

The Red Sox understandably want to be patient with Mayer and Roman Antony, but outside of the New York Yankees and Detroit Tigers, the American League is wide open. Boston can’t afford to fall further, and Mayer could be the boost it needs if Campbell does make the move to first base.
