‘LaNorris Sellers…that boy strong’: NFL Combine standouts rave about South Carolina quarterback

Everyone wants to talk about South Carolina quarterback LaNorris Sellers this offseason. The rising redshirt sophomore has made virtually every preseason list and hype-filled offseason prognostication. Despite not being present, Sellers was on the receiving end of praise from his peers at last week’s NFL Combine.

During interviews with Ryan Wilson of CBS Sports, a trio of expected early-round picks spoke about Sellers.

First came Texas A&M Aggies star pass rusher Shemar Stewart. Stewart, who was on the receiving end of one of Sellers’ most impressive performances in 2024, didn’t hesitate to answer with the South Carolina signal-caller’s name when asked about his toughest quarterback opponents from college. “LaNorris Sellers…Man, he is prime-time Cam (Newton)!” He continued, “That boy strong, I ain’t going to lie to you. I don’t know what they’re feeding him over there.”

Later, Stewart’s Texas A&M teammate Nic Scourton gave a more tongue-in-cheek answer regarding playing against Sellers. “He’s talented. I really dislike that guy. Nothing against him as a person–I’ve heard he’s a really good person–but I really dislike him.” Scourton said he has “dislike” for Sellers because the latter hurts defenders when they try to tackle him.

Following Wilson’s interviews with the Aggies, he heard the perspective of someone who didn’t have to tackle him (at least not at the college level). Fellow South Carolina star and potential first-round draft pick Nick Emmanwori backed up his claim from November that Sellers was the best quarterback in the nation with even more praise. “LaNorris…he’s a dude, man.” Said Emmanwori, “When I first seen him play in high school, I immediately thought he was like Cam Newton. I ain’t never seen nothing like it…you can’t tackle him…as he grows and develops, he’s going to become LaHeisman. That’s what I call him.”

While Stewart, Scourton, and Emmanwori all will be early selections in this year’s NFL Draft, LaNorris Sellers isn’t eligible. However, he could go pro after the 2025 season if he desires, and he will be a sought-after commodity. (For those curious, he has up to three more years of eligibility remaining.)

For now, though, Sellers and the Gamecocks have 176 days before they take the field again. The 2025 version of the South Carolina football team will take on the Virginia Tech Hokies in Atlanta for the Aflac Kickoff Game in hopes of starting something special as they take the next step forward toward the College Football Playoff. If USC, indeed, does take that next step, it will be thanks–in large part–to LaNorris Sellers.
