Legendary college basketball coach stepping down after 5-decade career

Longtime Miami basketball coach Jim Larrañaga will step down effective immediately, according to multiple reports.

The 75-year-old Larrañaga has been Hurricanes coach since 2011, and prior to that spent 14 seasons at George Mason. He also coached at Bowling Green (1986-97) and American International (1977-79) and also spent time as an assistant at Virginia and Davidson.

Larrañaga went to Final Fours at both George Mason (2006) and Miami (2023), and won seven conference regular-season championships and four conference tournament titles. His teams made the NCAA tournament a total of 11 times.

However, Miami is just 4-8 this season, with eight losses in its last nine games. Associate head coach Bill Courtney is expected to coach the team the remainder of the season.

Larrañaga was AP and Naismith national coach of the year in 2013 and his conference’s coach of the year five times. He has an overall record of 744-508 in 41 seasons as a college head coach.

A press conference has been scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Eastern on Thursday to announce Larrañaga’s retirement.
