PARKERSBURG, W.Va. (WTAP) – Many graduating athletes are getting ready for their first year of college sports. Parkersburg South grad Navi Hewitt is preparing for college basketball at Potomac State.
“It’s been going good,” says Hewitt. “I’ve been in the gym just trying to, mainly trying to put on weight, been working on a lot of skill work trying to stay away from too much, live basketball, playing pick up and stuff like that. I’m just really trying to lock down on my development, my skill trying to put on some weight so I can hang around some of these older guys.”
While Hewitt is already a skilled basketball player coming off a great career as a Patriot, there are some things the Potomac State coaching staff want him to develop to take his game to the next level.
“So coming into my freshman year, what they really want me to strive to be is kind of like a shooter role more than a little bit kind of like a 3-and-D kind of guy. You know what I mean? So they really want me to work, focus on my 3 point shot, quite a bit. So I’ve been working on that, been doing some ball handling. I’ve been just really trying to put on some weight.”
Navi attended an open gym at the college a little while back, and had his eyes opened to how competitive the collegiate hoops scene can be.
“I think I went up there and I played against some of the guys who are leaving, like Cam Wilkes. I played against another one of their three or four of their starters who are kind of leaving now, but it’s it’s different like I thought I was good coming up there, but it was a pretty humbling experience for the first couple of games. Took you a little bit to get, like, get used to and know that there are, there are definitely levels to it.”
Looking back on his high school career, Hewitt is grateful for his time at South.
“I think my high school career at South was it was, it was very well needed. I’m glad I transferred from Parkersburg Christian to Parkersburg South. I love Parkersburg Christian. It was fun, but it just wasn’t the competition and development I needed to play at the next level. So I think Coach Fallon and those guys really just got me got me well got me in the right mindset to play defense 100% all the way through. Just always giving 100% effort.”
Going into college, there are a few minor adjustments Navi says he’ll have to make in order to get himself in peak playing condition.
“Yeah, I think diet’s definitely a big one cause right now, I eat Oreos for breakfast, it’s bad. But I think once I get that dialed in, get the weight room going in there 5-6 times a day, you know, and really just it’s 24/7 gym access up there. So really just really dialing in for the two years and then hopefully see what I can get from there.”
Following his two years at Potomac State, Navi will be looking to take his talents to a bigger stage.
