Longhorn legend, College Football Hall of Famer Kenneth Sims dies at 65

Sims was the first overall pick in the 1982 NFL Draft after a stellar four-year career at Texas, and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2021.

AUSTIN, Texas — Legendary Texas Longhorns football player and College Football Hall of Famer Kenneth Sims has died at the age of 65.

Sims passed away Friday at his home in North Carolina, the university said.

Sims played for the Longhorns from 1978-1981, finishing with 322 tackles, 29 sacks, 50 tackles for loss, 15 forced fumbles, seven fumble recoveries and three blocked kicks. He earned consensus All-America and first-team All-Southwest Conference honors during his junior and senior seasons at Texas, including unanimous first-team recognition among the five recognized All-America teams in his senior season.

In his four seasons at Texas, the Longhorns posted a 35-12-1 overall record, with a 22-9-1 in Southwest Conference play, played in four bowl games, had two Top 10 finishes and three Top 12 finishes.

Following his outstanding college career, Sims was drafted first overall by the New England Patriots in the 1982 NFL Draft. Across eight seasons with the Patriots, he earned 17 sacks and made an appearance in Super Bowl XX.

Following his NFL career, Sims was enshrined in the Texas Athletics Hall of Honor in 1997, and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2021.
