TMG College Sports columnist Tony Barnhart, who will be entering his 50th season covering college football this year, has decided to retire after the 2025 season. Barnhart, who has affectionately been known as “Mr. College Football,” posted on his Facebook feed that he plans to spend this season on a “Thank you” tour of SEC sites, and he will write an essay at each stop with the intent of turning them into a book. He plans to work through the CFP National Championship Game in Miami and then retire. Barnhart noted he still has a few books left in him, and he hopes to continue speaking events. Barnhart started his career as a one-man sports department at the Union (S.C.) Daily Times before eventually moving on to the Greensboro News & Record, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, ESPN and CBS Sports across his career (SBJ).
