BATON ROUGE – College baseball season is right around the corner and preseason watch lists and rankings are being released to get fans ready for the 2025 campaign.
D1Baseball dropped its preseason top 25 rankings Monday morning and LSU baseball found itself inside the top 5. The Tigers are ranked No. 3 in D1’s first rankings for the 2025 season, behind only Texas A&M at No. 1 and Virginia at No. 2.
There are nine Southeastern Conference teams inside the top 25 in D1 Baseball’s rankings and Jay Johnson’s team has series with five of them during the regular season.
LSU is coming off a disappointing 2024 season where it struggled to get its footing in league play and ended up being a No. 2 seed in an NCAA Regional at North Carolina. The Tigers lost to the nation’s No. 4 seed in the Tar Heels in the regional final, 4-3, in 10 innings.

But there’s plenty of excitement and expectation of a bounce back for LSU in 2025. Seven positional starters return for the Tigers in Michael Braswell at shortstop, Jared Jones at first base, sophomore second baseman Steven Milam, outfielders Josh Pearson, Ashton Larson, Jake Brown and Ethan Frey. Six pitchers are back, highlighted by junior Gavin Guidry and sophomore left-hander Kade Anderson.
D1Baseball believes Johnson and his staff assembled college baseball’s best freshman class, headlined by pitcher William Schmidt, catcher Cade Arrambide and outfielder Derek Curiel, all considered top 15 freshmen in the country and were expected to sign pro baseball deals out of high school but decided to come to Baton Rouge.
