BATON ROUGE — Over the weekend at No. 9 Auburn, LSU baseball’s bats looked rattled and mustered up just eight runs in 27 innings.
By the middle of the second inning against McNeese State on Tuesday night at Alex Box Stadium, LSU had half that amount.
The offense, led by senior star Jared Jones, piled up hits early in the game and sustained it for much of the night for a much-needed rebound from the sweep at Auburn, defeating the Cowboys, 10-3.
No. 7 LSU (32-6, 10-5 SEC) remains undefeated in midweek games on the season and are set to host No. 15 Alabama (30-8, 8-7) for a three-game series starting Thursday night.
LSU baseball opens things up in the fourth vs McNeese
Chris Stanfield and Daniel Dickinson quickly got out to open the fourth. Derek Curiel broke the streak of five straight Tigers being retired with a hit and that sparked a four-run frame.
LSU proceeded to have six straight batters get on including Curiel, five of those off base hits. Jones, Ethan Frey, Steven Milam, Jake Brown and Luis Hernandez all singled with the last four collecting RBIs.
All series at Auburn, LSU did not have an inning where it had more than two hits. The Tigers’ offense stacking hits had to be pleasing for coach Jay Johnson to see.
Jones finished the night 3 for 3 with three RBIs and three runs.
LSU freshman phenom Derek Curiel continues remarkable on-base streak
Curiel already set the LSU baseball freshman record for consecutive games reaching base a handful of games ago. He now is the first player to reach in 38 straight games in the past two decades.
After a review overturned an out call to safe at first, Curiel extended his remarkable streak. Curiel finished the game 1 for 3 with an RBI and a run.
LSU freshman reliever Mavrick Rizy has longest appearance of season
Things were a little rocky when he entered the game for Conner Ware, who had walked two of the three batters he faced in the fifth.
Johnson turned the Rizy to calm things down and that’s what the big freshman did. He plunked the first batter he faced to load the bases but then struck out Davis Meche and Easton Dowell to get out of the jam.
From there, Rizy was dialed in, giving up just one hit over 2⅔ innings while striking out six and got the game to the eighth.
