Over the years, LSU has consistently proven itself to be a force in Omaha. The Tigers have claimed a total of seven national championships, a number that places them among the elite programs in NCAA history.
These titles came in 1991, 1993, 1996, 1997, 2000, 2009 and most recently in 2023. Each of those championship runs was marked by standout talent, elite pitching, and an unmistakable energy that has come to define LSU baseball.
Tigers continue their championship hunt with Omaha in their sights again
The program’s championship roots can be traced back to the leadership of former head coach Skip Bertman, who guided the team to five of its seven titles during the 1990s.
Bertman’s teams not only won, but they also dominated with style and power, setting new standards for collegiate success. Under Bertman, LSU took home the title in 1991, 1993, 1996, 1997, and 2000, making the Tigers the team to beat throughout the decade.
After Bertman, the program saw continued success under head coach Paul Mainieri, who delivered LSU’s sixth national title in 2009.
That championship, which came after a thrilling series against Texas, solidified the program’s continued excellence into the 21st century. Most recently, head coach Jay Johnson helped the Tigers return to the top of the college baseball world with their seventh title in 2023.
Now, in 2025, LSU finds itself on the brink of yet another historic moment. A win in this year’s College World Series would give the Tigers their eighth national championship, which would tie them with USC for the second-most in NCAA baseball history. It’s a milestone that few teams even dream of approaching, and LSU is within reach.
Along with their championship banners, LSU has a long-standing presence in the MCWS overall. Since 1986, the Tigers have made 20 total appearances in Omaha and compiled a record of 49-29 at the CWS, showcasing remarkable consistency across multiple generations of players and coaches. That number of appearances places them among the most experienced and successful programs to ever compete on the sport’s biggest stage.
