  • LSU and SMU have agreed to a home-and-home football series in 2028 and 2029.
  • The first game will be in Baton Rouge on Sept. 2, 2028, and the second in Dallas on Sept. 1, 2029.
  • Each school will pay the other $750,000 for their respective home game.
  • These games are likely to be LSU’s season openers in both years.

BATON ROUGE – LSU football has agreed to a home-and-home series with SMU.

The series will take place in 2028 and 2029 with the first matchup at Tiger Stadium on Sept. 2, 2028. LSU will make the return trip to SMU on Sept. 1, 2029.

As it stands, unless LSU adds any Week 0 games to those years, both games with the Mustangs will be season openers for the Tigers.

Per records obtained by The Daily Advertiser, LSU and SMU signed the home-and-home individual-game deals on March 20. LSU will pay SMU $750,000 for its visit to Baton Rouge in 2028. And the Mustangs will even the score the following season, writing a $750,000 check to LSU for the contest in Dallas in 2029.

Atlantic Coast Conference officials will work the game at LSU and Southeastern Conference officials will work the game at SMU, per the game contracts.

The LSU-SMU game in 2028 is the first nonconference game on the books for the Tigers that season so far. For the following season, LSU is nearly booked up in the nonconference slate with three games now on the schedule in 2029 with SMU on Sept. 1, Arizona State on Sept. 8 and Rice on Sept. 29.

If the SEC decides to go to a nine-game conference schedule, then the Tigers’ 2029 dates are all full.

LSU will look to add at least two more nonconference games to its 2028 schedule, again, dependent on whether the SEC expands its league slate.
