LSU will benefit from massive change to women’s college basketball

A big change is coming to women’s college basketball and LSU stands to benefit.

On Wednesday, the NCAA’s D-I schools voted to give finical rewards to teams who advance in the NCAA Tournament. The change will be put into effect this upcoming tournament.

Schools and conferences have made money off the men’s tournament for some time. Now, the women’s bracket will have a similar financial structure.

The pool will be $15 million this year before increasing to $20 million next year. By 2028, it will be $25 million.

Money will not go directly to schools, but conferences will receive the payouts with the freedom to distribute the money.

LSU and the SEC stand to benefit. Under Kim Mulkey, the Tigers are tournament contenders year in and year out. LSU is an example of what happens when a major program starts investing in women’s sports. LSU made a choice to hire Mulkey and the rewards were immediate.

With the change, LSU could be seeing an even bigger return on its investment.

Elsewhere in the SEC, South Carolina should earn the conference plenty of cash too. The Gamecocks are defending national champs and look poised to make another run this year.

Women’s basketball in the SEC continues to trend up, especially with the arrival of Texas and Oklahoma.
