Ethan Flodstrom hit a two-run homer and Lane Hutchinson launched a three-run homer, both in the second inning, as second-ranked Angelo State beat Lubbock Christian University 11-3 on Thursday night, May 15, ending the Chaparrals’ baseball season in the NCAA South Central Region 1 tournament in San Angelo.
Hutchinson finished with four runs batted in for Angelo State (46-8), the top seed in the region. The Rams will play No. 4 seed St. Edward’s (37-21) at 6 p.m. Friday, May 16, and again at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 17, with an additional game, if needed, after that.
Designated hitter Johnny Gomez had a two-run single for No. 5 regional seed LCU, which finished 34-23. First baseman Nicklaus Baumbach had a sacrifice fly.
The Rams ended the Chaps’ year for the fourth time in the past six full seasons. They also did it at regional in 2019, the Lone Star Conference tournament in 2021 and a super regional in 2024.
Earlier Thursday, in the first game of the regional, Connor Cox lashed a three-run double in a nine-run first inning as St. Edward’s beat LCU 10-7. The Hilltoppers roughed up Lone Star Conference pitcher of the year Ryan Markwardt (7-5) as the Chaps’ lefthander was charged with nine runs on eight hits in two innings. Six of the nine runs were unearned, scoring after a two-out error in the first.
LCU third baseman Brevin McCool went 2 for 4 with a home run and 2 RBI, and left fielder Shea Bowen went 3 for 5 with a homer and 2 RBI.
McCool finished the season with 31 homers and 84 RBI. The senior from Hobbs, New Mexico, broke the Lone Star Conference single-season and career home-run records. He had 61 homers in his four-year Chaps career. In the LCU record book, McCool’s 61 homers are tied for second with Richard Bohlken, two behind John Harris.
McCool and Markwardt were all-LSC first-team honorees. Right fielder Jacob Gutierrez (.408-7-57), Baumbach (.384-9-55) and Bowen (.355-11-57) made the second team, and center fielder Kyle Lewis (.373-4-49) was on the third team.
Shortstop Kade York and second baseman Frayner Chavez made the LSC all-defensive team. Chavez was charged with only one error in 222 chances, and he and York were involved in 36 double plays.
