Former Michigan State head football coach Mark Dantonio was named Tuesday to the College Football Playoff Selection Committee.
“I am very honored to be selected to the College Football Playoff Committee,” Dantonio said in a release from Michigan State announcing his appointment. “It’s exciting to join an outstanding group of people dedicated to college football and I will look to bring a coach’s perspective to the process. I want to thank the CFP for this opportunity to help and serve the game that has given so much to me throughout my career.”
Other new members on the 13-person committee are Baylor athletic director Mack Rhoades, who takes over for Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel as chair; Maryland AD Damon Evans, Middle Tennessee State AD Chris Massaro, former Mississippi tight end Wesley Walls and sports writers Ivan Maisel and Steve Wieberg.
Each member serves a three-year term on the committee. Manuel’s term expired, along with Chet Gladchuk, Jim Grobe, Will Shields and Kelly Whiteside.
Dantonio spent 13 seasons as the Spartans’ head coach before retiring in February 2020. He won more games than any other MSU head football coach, finishing 114-57, which including three Big Ten championships, victories and a College Football Playoff appearance in 2015. His 12 bowl-game appearances and six bowl victories also are program records.
Dantonio’s resume at Michigan State includes a record 12 bowl-game appearances (nine straight from 2007-15), including the 2014 Rose Bowl and 2015 Cotton Bowl among his program-record six bowl victories. The Spartans boasted seven top-25 finishes in the Associated Press poll under Dantonio, and 21 wins against top-25 opponents.
His teams won at least 11 games in five of six seasons from 2010-15, making Dantonio the first Big Ten head football coach to accomplish the feat. Dantonio, who also spent three seasons as the head coach at Cincinnati before arriving in East Lansing, was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in December.
The committee is in charge of ranking the teams to set them into the 12-team postseason bracket that debuted last season. Still undetermined is whether there will be changes to the system in 2025.
