Maryland basketball adds second commitment of the weekend

Commitment No. 13 is on the board for Buzz Williams. As expected, Don Bosco Institute (Ind.) senior Jaziah Harper committed to the Terps today, adding another piece to Williams’ inaugural roster at Maryland.

Via InsideMDSports’ earlier reporting:

I’m making a Crystal Ball prediction for Jaziah Harper to Maryland, with a confidence score of seven. Harper, a 6-7 small forward from Don Bosco Prep (Crown Point, Ind.), has been hearing from Maryland increasingly and is high on the Terps.

Harper, an athletic small forward, has also been hearing from Indiana and Wisconsin. The Hoosiers offered him in December, but then they changed coaches. He’s starting to learn about Maryland.

“Yeah, familiar with it. Did some research. I like the old school [history]. They have a lot of culture there. I love the atmosphere at the games at home, the winning, the development,” he said.

What does Maryland like about him?

“My defense, my effort, my athleticism, and my length. Upside. I have a lot of time to get better and work on my skills. They see my athleticism and my length. I’m young, so they have enough time to develop me. So, really excited,” he said. “So I’ve really been talking to the assistant coaches—coach Rock and coach Wolf.”

The staff is working on getting him to campus for an official.

“Yeah, it’s gonna be pretty soon. I’ve just been kind of waiting, being patient, looking at all my options. So yeah, I’m gonna make a decision pretty soon,” he said. “I’m thinking the end of this month, or next month.” What’s he looking for?

“I just want to feel like I’m valued,” he said. “I want to get better, be around a lot of guys who are gonna get better.”

Maryland found out about Harper through his coach.

“I kind of knew [an offer] was coming. My coach has been talking to them for a minute, sending them my film. Him and Buzz are big buds.. He’s been letting me know—just told me to keep working hard,” he said.”As soon ass [Williams] got to Maryland, my coach has been sending my film out to them, so they’ve been interested ever since,” he told IMS.  They have a lot of culture there. I love the atmosphere at the games at home, the winning, the development.”

Harper is a long-term stock who could redshirt next year. Between Harper and Kanss transfer Rakese Passmore, the Terps got a lot more athletic this weekend. What did Williams and his staff like about Harper?

“My defense, my effort, my athleticism, and my length. Upside. I have a lot of time to get better and work on my skills. They see my athleticism and my length. I’m young, so they have enough time to develop me. So, really excited,” he said. “So I’ve really been talking to the assistant coaches—coach Rock and coach Wolf.”
