The worst-kept secret in the college basketball coaching carousel is official: Kevin Willard is heading to Villanova. After three years in College Park, Willard turned his side affair into a marriage, leaving Maryland to find a coach at a difficult time. Not only have many coaches already made their moves—limiting some potential options (Niko Medved or Ryan Odom, anyone?)—but the transfer portal has been churning for a week, injecting urgency into the hiring process.
Maryland has only two key players potentially returning, Rodney Rice and Ja’Kobi Gillespie, but both could enter the portal, leaving the roster barren. So the university will need to move quickly to find Willard’s replacement—but there’s no AD, and that search has already been underway.
So who could Maryland hire to take over a program the previous coach essentially set on fire on his way out?
Here’s an early list—a mix of guys who already have traction or have been mentioned by sources, and others who have chances to be candidates.
