Massachusetts college basketball player born with one arm makes history, inspires others

A Lesley University women’s basketball player made history this season. Baileigh Sinaman-Daniel became the first player with one arm to score in an NCAA women’s basketball game.

She said she is working to inspire young athletes and prove all her doubters wrong.

“There are so many people in this world who hold themselves back from what they are destined to do, and I hope that my story inspires people to take risks,” said Sinaman-Daniel.

She said she gets the occasionally funny look when she steps on the hardwood, but she is quick to show them that she means business.

“I definitely have a lot of moments where I like step into a gym and people look at me a little confused and they’re like ‘why is she here, why is she dressing out, why is she warming up, why is she on the bench, why is she getting put in?'” Baileigh said.

The college junior has overcome much adversity over the course of her life. She said that growing up with one arm was not easy. She was even cut from her high school basketball team. Baileigh used it all as motivation to achieve her goals.

“Every time I step onto a court, I really just remember everything that people have told me that I couldn’t do,” she said.

Lesley University women’s basketball head coach Martin Rather has been enjoying every step of Baileigh’s journey.

“I’m really just so proud,” said Rather. “Seeing Baileigh score, you know her face lit up, so did those faces of her teammates, it was just a really wonderful moment.”

He said her hard work and determination embody the team that he is working to build.

“She’s a risk taker in a really good way,” Rather said. “I do think that rubs off on her teammates, on the entire program, and is sort of the ethos of what we are getting at as we are trying to build this Lesley women’s basketball program up.”
