OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – Ohio State’s win over Notre Dame in Monday’s College Football Playoff Championship game gave the Big Ten back-to-back national titles.
It also gave Matt Rhule an opportunity to clap back at a popular college football personality.
In a 45-second video posted to X on Tuesday, Rhule used Paul Finebaum’s own words to roast the ESPN host.
“Congratulations to [Ohio State] and [Ryan Day],” Rhule wrote alongside the video. “Looking forward to another exciting year of football in 2025 with everyone who makes this game so special like my friend [Paul Finebaum].”
The back-and-forth began last summer when Finebaum took exception to Rhule’s comments at Big Ten Media Days.
“I think four teams from this league should get in every year because this is the best league,” Rhule said during a presser in Indianapolis over the summer. “This is the NFL of college football, in my mind. That’s not to diminish any other league, the SEC is amazing, these other leagues are great, but the challenge in the Big Ten is going to be really difficult.”
Finebaum’s fiery comments came on ESPN’s Get Up program, responding to a question from host Mike Greenberg.
“Matt, stay in your lane!” Finebaum said. “Job one: Win enough games to get to some stupid bowl game. Don’t worry about the big boys, because you’re not one of them.”
Rhule posted the video of Finebaum’s criticism Tuesday evening, coupled with his comments this morning, following the Buckeyes victory.
“Does the Big Ten own college football?” Greenberg asked.
“The answer, Greeny, is yes,” Finebaum admitted. “The Big Ten, at the moment, owns college football. And there’s no way you can said it doesn’t, when you go back-to-back, that’s generational.”
The Huskers were one of few teams to go toe-to-toe with the Buckeyes in the regular season, falling just short of a major upset back in October.
