The New York Mets signed Juan Soto to a historic 15-year, $765 million deal in free agency. However, they have a chance to sign another superstar this offseason to pair with him.
The Mets already have Francisco Lindor to play alongside Soto. However, Newsday’s Laura Albanese predicted they would sign Pete Alonso to a “franchise-friendly deal” this offseason.
“The other remaining first base options aren’t all that tantalizing unless the Mets decide to go for third baseman Alex Bregman and move Mark Vientos to first,” wrote Albanese. “Sometimes, though, the easiest solution is also the best one, and it’s entirely possible Steve Cohen and Co. are waiting it out to barter a more franchise-friendly deal.”
The first base market dwindled last week. The Arizona Diamondbacks traded for Josh Naylor after Christian Walker signed with the Houston Astros. The New York Yankees signed Paul Goldschmidt. The Texas Rangers traded Nathaniel Lowe to the Washington Nationals. The Cleveland Guardians signed Carlos Santana. All of those moves leave few teams that need Alonso and can afford him.
It seems like a reach to think the Mets can sign Alonso and Soto in the same offseason. However, Steve Cohen has a tendency to transcend financial expectations. Alonso is a four-time All-Star and is beloved by Mets fans. With the prospect of potentially landing Vladimir Guerrero Jr. next winter, teams may be hesitant to sign Alonso.
However, the Mets and Alonso both seem to desire a reunion. Perhaps the sides can come to an agreement that gives the Mets some financial flexibility.
