The New York Mets added Juan Soto, Clay Holmes and Frankie Montas this offseason. They also brought back Sean Manaea. They have a chance to bring back another key player this winter.
As free agency continues, the first base market has started to settle. Teams have started filling the hole at first base and Pete Alonso remains unsigned. CBS Sports’ R.J. Anderson predicted that Alonso would be back with the Mets as his free agency continues to drag out.
“Say it with me now: modern front offices do not value non-elite right-handed first basemen. For as productive and talented as Alonso is, it never seemed likely that he would prove to be the exception,” wrote Anderson. “The one wild-card scenario, I suppose, was if a new executive (say, Buster Posey) eschewed that thinking to add a proven run producer to their lineup. That hasn’t happened yet, though, and the longer this drags on the more likely I think Alonso is to return to the Mets.”
Alonso is a four-time All-Star and has hit more home runs than any player in the National League since 2019. Only one player has hit more home runs than Alonso since he made his debut: Aaron Judge. Spotrac projects him to sign a six-year, $174 million deal in free agency.
The New York Yankees signed Paul Goldschmidt. The Houston Astros signed Christian Walker. The Arizona Diamondbacks traded for Josh Naylor and the Cleveland Guardians signed Carlos Santana. The Washington Nationals traded for Nathaniel Lowe. All the moves at first base around the league have left few teams in need of Alonso. Not to mention, few that can afford him.
