Michigan Baseball At College Baseball Showdown: What To Know

For a Michigan program not far removed from a College World Series championship round run, the 2025 season might be its most intriguing campaign since. The Wolverines are looking to bounce back after finishing out of the NCAA Tournament picture in 2024, and they must do so against a new-look Big Ten Conference that welcomes perennial powerhouse UCLA; history-rich USC; and recent national contender Oregon.

Michigan will prepare for the challenging conference slate to come with an equally demanding visit to the 2025 Amegy Bank College Baseball Series in Arlington, Texas. The Wolverines join national championship hopefuls Arkansas and TCU, as well as a dangerous Kansas State team, for the second weekend of action at Globe Life Field.

Michigan Baseball Names to Know

Kurt Barr

Third Team All-Big Ten honoree Kurt Barr returns as the likely Friday starter for the Wolverines’ pitching staff in 2025. Barr finished with a team-leading 3.41 ERA in 89 ⅔ innings pitched, struck out 6,0 and limited opposing batters to a .224 average.

Along with being one of the Big Ten’s top returning starters, the 2025 season promises to be special for Barr because he’ll also be in a staff alongside his brother, Preston. The freshman Preston joins the Michigan lineup. Kurt told the Gross Pointe News last summer, “We played baseball with each other our whole lives, from Little League [on]…and have shared a lot of memories. At Michigan, hopefully,y we can just keep making more.”

Joonsung Park

South Korean import Joonsung Park shined at prep powerhouse IMG Academy before his arrival at Michigan. As a freshman in 2024, Park debuted midway through the campaign and showed plenty of promise with a double and RBI in his first start and a home run in his second start.

After appearing in 13 games total last season, Park’s role in 2025 will be an intriguing subplot of the early part in Michigan’s schedule. The College Baseball Showdown might be a potential breakout platform for the sophomore shortstop.

Will Rogers

Two-way player Will Rogers provided both a dependable presence in the pitching rotation, working 49 ⅓ innings in 2024, and behind the plate at catcher. The righty Rogers struck out 40 batters in 2024 against only 19 walks. He worked effectively both as a starter, with included nearly going the distance in a Big Ten Tournament win over Illinois, and out of the bullpen with a pair of saves.

At the dish, Rogers is Michigan’s second-leading returning batter in a variety of key metrics, including home runs with eight.

Mitch Voit

A 1st Team All-Big Ten selection in 2024, Mitch Voit is among the most versatile players in the nation in 2025. He is Michigan’s top returning hitter, having produced the team’s best batting average among returners (.292), slugging percentage (.572), OPS (.945), and the most home runs of Wolverines back in the fold with 14. His 46 RBI tied Stephen Hrustich for team-best.

In addition to his importance to Michigan’s offense, Voit is one of the club’s most-tested pitchers. He worked 62 ⅓ innings in 10 starts, striking out 41 and posting a 5.49 ERA.

Jeter Ybarra

Headlining a transfer class that On3.com ranks as the nation’s 10th-best is Jeter Ybarra. The talented designated hitter and utilityman comes to Ann Arbor by way of Michigan’s new Big Ten counterpart Washington, where Ybarra had two promising seasons in the Pac-12 Conference.

Ybarra homered six times in 2024 and drove in 39 runs for the Huskies. His rangy, 6-foot-4 frame could become a key weapon for Michigan at the plate if he continues to progress as a power hitter in 2025.

Michigan College Baseball Showdown Opponents

Arkansas

SEC powerhouse and annual College World Series contender Arkansas reloads for 2025 with its typically stacked roster. The Razorbacks feature two of the top prospects in the 2026 MLB draft class with Cam Kozeal, a Vanderbilt transfer; and Nolan Souza. Arkansas also restocks with veteran talent via the transfer portal, adding Rocco Peppi to join last year’s West Coast import who made a splash, Wehiwa Aloy.

Kansas State

Kansas State looks to make noise in the always-tough Big 12 Conference, though the Wildcats do so with an entirely new-look lineup compared to 2024. The revamped K-State roster gets its first major test of 2025 with the stacked competition at the College Baseball Showdown.

TCU

A College World Series fixture for the last decade, TCU aims to return to form after a challenging 2024. The Horned Frogs rebuild around one of the top returning talents in the Big 12, Anthony Silva. They also welcome in the conference’s preseason Freshman of the Year, Noah Franco. Franco’s early-season performance, including at Globe Life Field, provides one of TCU’s most intriguing stories of 2025.
