Michigan football vs. Oregon score today: Live updates, highlights from Week 10 game

Michigan football takes on the top team in the nation at home on Saturday.

The Wolverines (5-3) are hosting the No. 1 Oregon Ducks (8-0) at Michigan Stadium looking to pull off a massive upset. Michigan got back in the win column by knocking off Michigan State last weekend to retain control of the Paul Bunyan Trophy and move a win away from bowl eligibility.

Oregon has been a bully in its first year in the new, expanded Big Ten Conference. The Ducks have won their first five conference games, including four by 21 or more points, and took down No. 4 Ohio State by a point to vault to the top spot in the country. Last week, Oregon handled Illinois, the last team to beat Michigan, 38-9.

Michigan can secure a bid to a bowl game and the marquee win of its season if it knocks off the Ducks. The Wolverines are 1-1 at home against teams ranked in the top 25 at the time of the game, with a blowout loss to Texas and a comeback win over USC.

Michigan vs. Oregon live updates, game highlights

1:31, 1Q: Davis Warren hits Tyler Morris to tie game at 7

Michigan turned the fumbled punt into a touchdown on an impressive catch from Tyler Morris. Davis Warren rolled to his right and threw across his body back towards the middle of the field and Morris stopped on a dime and reached back to snag it to tie the game. Donovan Edwards picked up the only first down on the drive with a powerful 18-yard run up the gut.

4:50, 1Q: Oregon fumbles punt return, Michigan recovers

The Wolverines got their first big break. After another quick three-and-out, Joe Taylor popped the returner Ryan Pellum after a few steps and knocked the ball loose and wide receiver C.J. Charleston recovered the ball at Oregon’s 28-yard line in a prime spot to score.

6:53, 1Q: Dillon Gabriel threads needle to Evan Stewart for Oregon TD; Michigan trails 7-0

The Oregon offense looks as advertised. The Ducks quickly drove 63 yards on 12 plays to reach the end zone to take a lead on the opening possession. Dillon Gabriel took a handful of short passes and completed all seven of his pass attempts, including a perfect back-shoulder pass to Evan Stewart, who survived the contact from Aamir Hill for a ridiculous catch in the corner of the end zone. Michigan’s defense forced two third downs but could not get off the field.

Michigan OL Jeff Persi injures knee

Reserve offensive lineman Jeff Persi, who has spent time filling in on the offensive line and punt coverage, injured his knee on Michigan’s first punt after the opening possession ended in a three-and-out. Persi was near the sidelines looking to take down returner Tez Johnson, but he got knocked off balance by a blocker and hurt his right leg. He stayed down on the field and eventually limped to a cart by the tunnel entrance with the help of trainers without putting any weight on his right leg.

Michigan injury report: CBs Will Johnson, Jyaire Hill out

All-American cornerback Will Johnson is out for the second straight game with a lower-body injury he suffered against Illinois and Michigan’s second starter outside, Jyaire Hill, is also out with an undisclosed injury. Right tackle Andrew Gentry was also ruled out for the season for the injury he picked up last week against Michigan State. Defensive tackle Rayshaun Benny and running back Jordan Marshall are listed as questionable.

Michigan vs. Oregon pregame notes

Michigan went back to Davis Warren at quarterback against MSU and the offense moved the ball consistently for the first time in a month. Michigan had its first turnover-free game on offense this season and pulled out a few tricks to spring big passing plays to intersperse the power-running approach.

But this weekend is an entirely different challenge for Michigan. Oregon ranks 10th in the country in scoring defense and has only given up over 14 points twice this season against two playoff hopefuls in OSU and Boise State. Michigan will have to lean on a defense that dominated in the second half against MSU, and find a way to hold the ball on offense to keep Oregon’s offense off the field.

The Ducks rank No. 12 in passing (300 yards per game), No. 62 on the ground (167.1 yards) and No. 25 in scoring (35 points per game). Oklahoma transfer quarterback Dillon Gabriel has thrived in his final college season with 19 touchdowns, five interceptions and a 76.2% completion percentage this year. Running back Jordan James and receiver Tez Johnson headline a talented skill position group capable of breaking big plays.

Michigan vs. Oregon prediction, picks

Tony Garcia, Detroit Free Press: Michigan avoided going 0-for-October by beating MSU, but its issues are far from solved. U-M fell to Illinois and went toe-to-toe with MSU, two teams which were handled by at least three scores by Oregon. For the first time since Week 2’s game vs. Texas, U-M will be at a disadvantage in the trenches. That didn’t go well then, and it’s hard to see how this goes all that differently. The pick: Oregon 31, Michigan 16.
