Special teams always goes underappreciated in the grand scheme of college football conversation, and for many of the best teams in the sport, it is a matter of “out of sight, out of mind.” With a great offense comes little need to trot out a punter, and there is a lower reliance now than ever on field goal attempts as fourth-down conversions become more commonplace. A dynamic special teams unit, though, can separate the best College Football Playoff contenders from the rest.

Michigan and Georgia are two prime examples of that fact in 2025, as both teams boast exemplary specialists. Special teams goes beyond kickers and punters, though, and oftentimes the best returners come from unexpected places.
