Minnesota Basketball Transfer Portal Profile: Miami 6’9 PF Kiree Huie

Is Minnesota really done with their 25-26 roster?  There is a chance they could sneak in one more big to their bench and maybe take a walk-on (whatever the modern day version of a walk-on is). That big could possibly be Kiree Huie who recently decommitted from UTSA.

As a junior at Idaho State, Huie had four double-doubles and six double figure rebounding games.

Keep in mind the Gophers don’t have much money left when it comes to their NIL/Revenue Sharing/Salary/Whatever so anything they add will be a depth piece scholarship wise would be somewhat limited.  But year after year the Gophers have been adding bigs at the last moment for depth.  Names like Jack Wilson, Trey Edmonds, Charlie Daniels and Danny Ogele come to mind.

With two true centers (Turner and Vaihola) and two true four men (Grove and Crocker-Johnson) plus third year walk-on Erik Reader (but of course forwards in Durkin and Tyson that can play the four, especially Tyson) the Gophers could use one more body in the paint.  Hence the name Kiree Huie surfacing.

Huie was committed this spring to UTSA but he decommitted a few days ago. Huie missed the first 2.5 months of the 24-25 season at Miami because of a hand injury. By the time Huie played the Miami season was completely in the dumps as they had lost 13 of 14 games just before he played his first game. Huie wasn’t able to get fully healthy and be in the main rotation until the end of February.

Huie spent the first two years of his four year career at a junior college so the new NCAA rules would allow him two more years to play college basketball.

The Numbers.  This year, his fourth year of college basketball, Huie played in 14 games averaging nine minutes a game. He made 9 of 19 field goal attempts and 4 of 7 foul shots attempts. Kiree totaled 22 points, 20 rebounds and four blocks in the 127 minutes he played.

As a junior at Idaho State, Huie started 32 of 34 games averaging 11.3 points and 5.6 rebounds a contest playing 27 minutes a game.  He shot 53.6 percent from the field on nine shots a game and was a 58 percent foul shooter.

Huie spent his sophomore year at Odessa College starting 26 games. His team had a 30-4 overall record and 15-1 conference record. Huie averaged 10.6 points on 60.8 percent shooting, 5.9 rebounds, and 1.6 blocks in 20.6 minutes per game. As a freshman at Odessa, Kiree averaged 6.4 points and 3.6 rebounds a game shooting 63 percent from the field and 53 percent at the foul line.

History.  Before heading to junior college, Kiree has been listed at both Liberty High School and Desert Valley Prep in Las Vegas where he was the 15th ranked player in the state graduating in 2021. He is from Grayson, Georgia and in 2019-20, Kiree was with Grayson High School (GA) when they played in the Georgia Class AAAAAAA state championship game.  He is a business major.
