Game 1: Mississippi State 14, Rice 3

The Bulldogs jumped ahead early to take Game 1 against Rice via run-rule.

It was an all-around effort offensively. All nine starters reached base and eight of the starters scored a run. MSU broke it open with eight runs in the seventh inning and three home runs. Aaron Downs hit a no-doubt leadoff pinch-hit solo home run; Nolan Stevens smacked a two-run homer to right; Ace Reese ended the game with an opposite field two-run home run.

Pico Kohn was strong again starting on the mound, pitching 6.1 innings with six strikeouts and two earned runs allowed. His biggest blunder came in the fifth inning when he allowed his first walk of the season. Then on the next at-bat, Hiram Bocachica Jr. hit a two-run home run.

Hunter Hines not starting for Mississippi State vs Rice

Starting first baseman Hunter Hines is not starting on Friday for Mississippi State. The senior has started all 179 games he’s played as a Bulldog but has struggled to start the season. He’s batting .226 with two home runs and six RBIs but individually left nine batters on base in Tuesday’s loss to Troy.

North Alabama transfer Gehrig Frei is starting at first base in Hines’ place.
