MLB Rumors: How Red Sox Target Feels About Possible Astros Return

There was a huge development in Alex Bregman’s free agency that could affect the Boston Red Sox and Detroit Tigers.

According to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale on Thursday, the Astros are “keeping the door ajar” for a possible Bregman return. However, they aren’t optimistic about the idea. The Athletic’s Chandler Rome added that Houston’s longstanding offer of a six-year $156 million contract remains on the table as the sides engaged in talks after the All-Star remained unsigned for weeks.

Ari Alexander of KPRC 2 Sports added more context to the situation when he added that Bregman also was “keeping the door open” for an Astros return. The two-time World Series champion never voiced frustration with the team that drafted him in the 2015 draft. However, talks stalling led him to reportedly be open to other teams like the Red Sox and Tigers.

Bregman reportedly is Detroit’s “top priority” even as it explores the reliever market. The Astros reportedly are trying to trade Ryan Pressly, which could affect Bregman. And manager Alex Cora praised the Gold Glove infielder multiple times this offseason, including at Fenway Fest this month.

Alexander’s report could mount pressure on Boston and Detroit to get negotiations rolling as it appears Bregman and his agent Scott Boras are trying to determine the best contract number.
