Craig Breslow on Tuesday confirmed the Red Sox are “still pursuing” a right-handed bat.
While prized free agent Alex Bregman undoubtedly could fill that void for Boston, Breslow and company appear to be exploring another avenue to potentially check the box.
The Boston Globe’s Alex Speier on Wednesday reported the Red Sox and the Cardinals are “once again engaged in discussions” about a trade centered around Nolan Arenado. That said, Speier clarified that as of Tuesday night, “there wasn’t an agreement” between Boston and St. Louis about the parameters of a potential deal.
According to the veteran Red Sox insider, “there are ongoing discussions” about how much of Arenado’s remaining money owed would be covered by the Cardinals. ESPN’s Jeff Passan highlighted that obstacle in a column published Tuesday and noted Boston’s interest in Arenado would be “iffy” if St. Louis doesn’t agree to eat more of the third baseman’s owed cash.
Nonetheless, talks between the Red Sox and the Cardinals reportedly “remain alive” and Arenado would waive his no-trade clause if the sides can come to terms, per Speier. The 33-year-old isn’t a perfect fit in Boston, but it’s probably a trade still worth exploring for the Red Sox, especially if they lose hope in their chances of adding Bregman.
