The release of MLB The Show 25 is now just around the corner. With that, a new trailer has come out that appears to show that several college teams are going to be available to play with in the game, to some extent.
Gameplay from the recent trailer appears to show the UCLA Bruins, TCU Horned Frogs, Cal State Fullerton Titans, Texas Longhorns, Vanderbilt Commodores, Tennessee Volunteers, LSU Tigers, and South Carolina Gamecocks in the game. That’s because Road to the Show is going to begin in a player’s amateur career, using metal bats in high school and into college. However, just how many games or how extensive the gameplay is going to be in the college stages of the game is not immediately clear.
You can watch the trailer that MLB The Show 25 released, here:
“Even a game as timeless as baseball must evolve,” the voiceover says. “From the early years of high school to the thrill of college baseball, to the promise of the minors, only you can control your journey’s evolution.”
The gameplay appears to be similar to that of the Madden series, which has allowed user to play with college teams in recent years. That series isn’t alone, with NBA2K also taking advantage of a limited number of college teams.
Recent changes in college athletics, notably the use of NIL, have made it much more possible for college athletes to appear in games. That has also, in turn, made it easier for teams to appear without just having generic players in the game. The most notable of those series is the EA NCAA Football series, which was released in the summer of 2024 for the first time since NCAA 14 was released in 2013.
At one point, EA also had college basketball and college baseball video game series. The basketball series ended with NCAA Basketball 10, which was released in 2009. Then, the baseball series was a part of EA’s MVP Baseball series, which saw the company lose rights to MLB in 2005. That prompted a switch to MVP: NCAA Baseball. There were 2006 and 2007 versions of that game before the series came to an end. Now, it will be interesting to see if MLB The Show: 25 is going to be a step toward an NCAA Baseball game returning to shelves.
MLB The Show 25 is set to be released on March 18th. Users who pre-order for Digital Deluxe Edition gaining early access on March 14th.
