MMO Roundtable: Pete Alonso Is Back!

He’s coming home… tell the world he’s coming home… Pete Alonso will officially be back in the blue and orange! It was a long and bumpy road, but the Mets and Alonso have agreed to a two-year, $54 million deal with a $10 million signing bonus. Of course, we’re all pumped here at MMO and had to share our reactions with you all.

I can finally unsubscribe to Jeff Passan notifications. But in all seriousness, this was the final hurdle the Mets needed to overcome to call their offseason a success. They were never going to spend big on pitching, instead turning their resources to the lineup. The additions of Soto and now re-signing of Alonso gives the Mets a depth they haven’t seen in quite some time. While it would be nice to secure his tenure with the Mets a bit longer, the Mets made the right move holding out in the negotiations.

OMG! The Mets’ offseason culminated with arguably the move they needed the most. With Alonso coming back to Queens, the team established certainty throughout their core, a group now buttressed by future Hall-of-Famer Juan Soto. This move gives the club flexibility both in the present and the future, giving the club a short-term fix at the most important offensive position and ensuring a trio of unproven minor leaguers develop without haste. The club has continued to make moves to establish themselves as a long-term contender with bringing Alonso back on a team-friendly deal representing the latest example of this strategy.

It’s about time! This has been a long and stressful process for this fanbase. Just thankful to know it’s finally over! David Stearns, you get an A+++. Unbelievable job from him to get this done on fair terms. Polar Pete is back where he belongs!

Chris Bello

Hell yeah.

It just felt like destiny that Pete Alonso would remain in New York. Even as reports emerged that both the Mets and Alonso were looking elsewhere, it just didn’t feel like he was going to leave. Now Alonso can go after the franchise home run record and try to help the team win a ring. David Stearns has swung for the fences this offseason and I can’t wait for the season to begin.

David Stearns, Steve Cohen and the Mets played this perfectly. Keeping someone who fits here while also having an eye on the future. Not bending to the erroneous demands of Scott Boras is a huge win for the Mets. Also, Pete comes back to a place he knows, with a chance to prove himself again with a security blanket behind him. I’m glad Alonso is back and he makes this Mets lineup incredibly deep and powerful.

David Melendi

Yes! The longer this dragged on, the more I was worried he was gone. I love the batting order. Putting Pete in the middle of it makes everyone fall into place.

It’s about time. This was the right move for the New York Mets. This was the right move for Pete Alonso. And finally, the two sides got it done. It’s a big drop from what Alonso turned down last offseason, but he gets another chance to bet on himself and try to cash in again next year. The Mets will be in the first base market again in 2026 (a free agent class that as of now will include Vladimir Guerrero Jr.), and that’s fine. The 2025 Mets are better with Pete Alonso, and that’s all that matters right now. Tip of the cap to David Stearns for waiting it out, sticking to his guns, not bending to fan pressure, and getting Alonso back on a contract that makes sense for the team.

Mojo Hill

If you’d told me at the beginning of the offseason that Alonso would only get a two-year contract with an opt-out in the middle, I would have been pretty shocked. I feel like there has to be some regret/second-guessing within Alonso and Scott Boras’s camp right now. But pitchers and catchers report in a week, so it finally became time to get this done already.

It’s beneficial for the Mets, who don’t have to commit long-term to a 30-year-old first baseman. They get to keep their homegrown star without the burden of an over-generous financial commitment (though the AAV is still high). Alonso might be disgruntled that the contract was a far cry from his earlier hopes/the reported offers, but I’m sure he’s happy to be back with the group he knows (and to be employed by anyone, finally).

I already can’t help but think about two years from now when Alonso is on the market again. It’s hard to see him faring much better during his next go-round unless he has a huge year in 2025 and takes the opt-out. I don’t see that happening, but he’s still a strong bat that the Mets very much needed.

Honestly? Ever since Steve Cohen basically called out Scott Boras during his Amazin’ Day panel with David Stearns, I had a feeling Pete Alonso would be back. Cohen knew what he was doing! He’s a genius businessman. I’m so happy that our polar bear will be back in the orange and blue. We need him, not just for his on-field performance, but also for his love of the game and the team. I had Mike Piazza growing up, the generation after me had David Wright, this new generation needs Pete Alonso.

Michael Lloyd

Thank goodness! Another two weeks of talking about will he be here or won’t he and I think many of us would have had beyond our fill of the Alonso saga. Beyond the dismissive hand swipes, however, there lies a really good place and a win-win-win, a rare triumvirate of winners. Pete Alonso wins, he makes more than any first baseman this year and gets to play where he wants, at Citi Field for the Mets. The Mets organization wins, from Ownership to the Front office, because it held the line, said we won’t do a deal that doesn’t make good business sense and bid against ourselves. We fans win. We get to see a homegrown player in his prime that will set a new franchise record for home runs and contribute towards what should be one of the most exciting and anticipated Mets seasons ever! Win-Win-Win Now, the players need to perform. 1986 needs to be a distant memory. We need new memories. 2025 Mets memories… Peter Alonso makes that seem more realistic at this moment.
