The Philadelphia Flyers signed free agent forward Karsen Dorwart of the Michigan State Spartans to a two-year, $1.95-million, entry-level contract.
Dorwart, a 22-year-old native of Sherwood, Oregon, was an undrafted center who just completed his third season with Michigan State.
The Sherwood, Oregon native had 13 goals and 31 points in 35 games for Michigan State this season.
The 6-foot-1, 195-pound Dorwart ranked second on the team in points (13 goals, 31 points) and was tied for the most power-play goals (5).
He helped lead the Spartans to a Big 10 championship with a goal and an assist in the final. He also had a goal and an assist in the season-ending 4-3 loss to Cornell.
In three seasons at MSU, Dorwart has 38 goals, 54 assists and 92 points in 111 games after playing one season with the Sioux Falls Stampede of the USHL.
NHL signs $7.7 US billion media rights deal
The NHL has reached an agreement with Rogers Communications on a 12-year, $7.7 US billion media rights agreement in Canada, according to a person familiar with the deal.
The person spoke to The Associated Press on Monday on condition of anonymity because the move had not been announced. Sportico first reported on the deal.
The contract is the latest source of revenue for the league as the salary cap continues to climb. The previous deal reached in November 2013 was worth $5.2 billion CAD over 12 years.
The NHL contracted with ESPN and Turner Sports in 2021 for the current U.S. TV and streaming rights deal for $4.5 billion over seven years combined.
The TV contract in hockey’s birthplace helps the NHL’s revenue forecast for the near future, even if the Canadian dollar is weak based on tariffs and a trade war that affects the cross-border league’s business. Commissioner Gary Bettman expressed concern about the current economic situation at the general managers’ annual spring meeting in mid-March.
“If the Canadian economy is impacted to the extent that the dollar declines, the Canadian dollar, vis a vis the U.S. dollar, we do everything in U.S. dollars, so that’ll have an impact potentially on our Canadian clubs and (hockey-related revenue),” Bettman said. “But we’re hoping this is a moment in time and we get through this. I’m not weighing in politically.”
Revenues have climbed in recent years based not only on TV and streaming contracts but jersey and helmet advertising, dasherboard ads and more.

Capitals sign top prospect Leonard
The Washington Capitals signed top prospect Ryan Leonard to his entry-level contract on Monday, and he could make his NHL debut as soon as Tuesday at the Boston Bruins.
Leonard joins the team fresh off he and Boston College getting knocked out of the NCAA Tournament by Denver on Sunday in the quarterfinal round.
He signed a three-year contract worth $2.85 million that carries an annual salary cap hit of $950,000 through the 2026-27 season.
Leonard was the eighth pick in the 2023 draft and quickly became one of hockey’s most anticipated young players.
Leonard, who turned 20 in January, helped the U.S. win back-to-back world junior championships and reached the Frozen Four national championship last year, also losing to Denver.
Avs add Makar’s brother
The Colorado Avalanche signed forward Taylor Makar, the younger brother of defenseman Cale Makar, to a one-year, entry-level deal on Monday.
Taylor Makar will join the Colorado Eagles of the American Hockey League on an amateur tryout for the rest of the season. He joins the organization after scoring 18 goals and recording 12 assists in 38 games for the University of Maine.
The 24-year-old Makar was a seventh-round pick by Colorado in 2021. His brother, Cale, leads all NHL defensemen this season in points (84), goals (27) and assists (57). He became the third-fastest defenseman to reach 400 points in February.
Cale Makar, 26, was the fourth overall pick by the Avalanche in 2017.
