Constant change is inevitable in modern college football.
On Jan. 21 the Colorado State football program sent out a news release saying the forming of the 2025 defensive staff was complete.
About a week later and that has shifted. Like a river, change is constant in college football.
In recent days the Rams have seen two defensive coaches depart for jobs with Power 4 programs, leaving openings on CSU’s staff.
Adam Pilapil was on the inaugural Jay Norvell staff at CSU in 2022 and called the plays in the 2024 Arizona Bowl after Freddie Banks was fired.

Pilapil was in line to remain on CSU’s defensive staff under new defensive coordinator Tyson Summers, but this week he was hired to the same position at Wake Forest (where Banks was hired to coach defensive backs after being let go at CSU).
Allen Brown was hired from Washington State to be CSU’s cornerbacks coach. That hire was announced by the school on Jan. 10. On Tuesday, Allen was hired at Cal as a defensive backs coach.
If CSU maintains the same structure as when it announced the defensive staff last week it means there are now two new openings.
Here’s a look at CSU’s 2025 defensive staff, with a couple of support roles still to be announced:
- Defensive coordinator: Tyson Summers
- Defensive line: Chuka Ndulue
- Cornerbacks: Open (was Allen Brown)
- Safeties: Brayden Herdic
- Linebackers: Open (was Adam Pilapil)
- Outside Linebackers: John Jancek
- Merritt James Norvell Diversity Fellowship/Assistant defensive line coach: Adam Lopez
- Defensive graduate assistant: Tyson Williams
CSU has also said it will also add another graduate assistant and a defensive director of scouting.
