Morning Briefing: Mets Demote Alvarez, Promote Two Prospects

On Sunday, prior to Game 3 against the Phillies, the New York Mets announced that they optioned catcher Francisco Alvarez to Triple-A Syracuse and recalled catcher Hayden Senger as the corresponding roster move. More on that here.

Meanwhile, two of the Mets’ top prospects, Carson Benge and Jacob Reimer, are being promoted to Double-A Binghamton. Both were mashing in Brooklyn. Read more here.

Lower on the farm, Colin Houck is being called up to High-A Brooklyn. After the 20-year old hit a walk-off hit for the Single-A St. Lucie Mets on Sunday, St. Lucie announced he had also been promoted. He had been struggling since being selected in the first round in 2023, but owns a solid .802 OPS for St. Lucie this year.

Per Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic and MLB on FOX, according to sources, catcher James McCann has been released by the Braves so he can sign a major-league deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Diamondbacks’ starting catcher, Gabriel Moreno, is on the injured list with a right hand contusion.

As MLB Trade Rumors wrote, the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles of the Nippon Professional Baseball league in Japan have signed Luke Voit to a contract for the remainder of the 2025 season. Voit arrived in Japan this weekend.

The Astros are signing Jon Singleton, who was with the Syracuse Mets earlier this year, according to Chandler Rome of The Athletic.
