On weekday mornings, Nevada Sports Net will recap three big headlines of the day in its Morning Download. Read below for today’s topics.
1. College football’s transfer portal opens
With Nevada football wrapping up spring camp last Friday, the next step in the offseason is transfer portal season, part II. The spring portal opened today and closes April 25, so you will see more changes to rosters across the nation. Nevada already has at least four players entering the portal in running back Savion Red, long snapper Eli Gilmour, offensive lineman Aiden Kehm and defensive back Bryson Parker. Nevada needs to cut around 15 players from its spring camp roster to get in line with the expected NCAA maximum of 105 players. It will cut down even further if it’s going to add more players via the portal, which is likely. The offensive and defensive lines seem like areas to bolster. We’ll post our spring transfer portal tracker later today. Here was the winter edition of Nevada’s portal comings and goings.
2. Kobe Sanders plays at the Portsmouth Invitational
Nevada basketball player Kobe Sanders was invited to the Portsmouth Invitational, a pre-draft scouting event in Virginia for college seniors. Sanders is on a team called “Sales Systems, LTD.” Some of these team names, like “Roger Brown’s Restaurant,” are hilarious. Other Mountain West players at the event include Boise State’s Tyson Degenhart and New Mexico’s Nelly Junior Joseph. The Portsmouth is generally for players who didn’t get invited to the NBA Combine but will still get a chance to play in front of scouts. Sanders will play in three games in the four-day event. Last season, Sanders averaged 15.8 points, 4.5 assists and 3.9 rebounds for Nevada.
3. Reno Rodeo in running for nation’s top rodeo
The Reno Rodeo is in the running for USA Today’s 10Best Readers’ Choice award for “Best Rodeo.” Fans can vote once per day here through April 28 to help the “Wildest, Richest Rodeo in the West.” Nominees are selected by a panel of travel experts and journalists, and winners are determined through public voting. Winners will be announced May 7. “We’re proud to represent Reno on this national stage,” George Combs, general manager of the Reno Rodeo, said in a news release. “Our fans show up year after year with unmatched energy and pride — we’re asking them to help us bring this award home by voting daily.” This year’s Reno Rodeo runs from June 19-28 with tickets on sale here.
