College basketball insider Jon Rothstein has Michigan State basketball as a top 20 squad in his latest updated rankings for the 2025-26 season.

With constant portal movement still occurring this week, Rothstein released an updated batch of rankings for the 2025-26 season. Michigan State remained in his top 20, coming in at No. 19.

The Spartans were once a top 10 team in Rothstein’s initial way-too-early rankings, but have slipped over the past few weeks. Michigan State was first listed at No. 9 in his first batch of rankings for next season that came out in early April.

Among Big Ten teams, Michigan State comes in at No. 5. The Spartans were behind Purdue (No. 2), UCLA (No. 4), Michigan (No. 7) and Oregon (No. 16). Rothstein also had Wisconsin (No. 21), Ohio State (No. 26), Illinois (No. 30), Maryland (No. 32), Nebraska (No. 36), USC (No. 39) and Northwestern (No. 41) included in his top 45 schools rankings.
