OMAHA, NE. — Before he led his program to its first Men’s College World Series this season, Murray State pitcher Nic Schutte played quarterback at Male High School in Louisville.
Schutte guided the Bulldogs to the 2021 Class 6A state championship game, where they fell 31-21 to St. Xavier. His biggest play of the game was an 88-yard touchdown pass to then-Wisconsin commit Vincent Anthony for an early 6-0 lead. Schutte played tough, looking to dedicate a potential victory to his father Brian Schutte, who unexpectedly died just days earlier.
It’s no wonder Schutte has shown such poise during NCAA postseason baseball. Who’s afraid of Ole Miss, Georgia Tech or Duke after facing what he did at such a young age?
Now a college junior, Schutte looks to keep Murray State in the running for a national championship by eliminating SEC standout Arkansas in a win-or-go-home game at Charles Schwab Field this afternoon.
