One of the biggest goals for a sports fan is to visit some of the country’s best football stadiums. Whether it’s for historical reference or just the pure joy of watching football, being able to attend a football game in a memorable stadium is a memory that many will never forget. As for me, I have been lucky enough to be able to attend many football games in various stadiums across the country. From regular-season games to national championships, I have almost seen it all. Today, I am going to rank the top four stadium experiences I have attended in my lifetime.
For reference, my hometown team is the University of Georgia Bulldogs, so all of these games include Georgia.
4. Auburn defeats Georgia at Jordan-Hare Stadium in 2013
I was lucky enough to be able to travel to Auburn, Ala. to watch the soon-to-be national championship runner-ups defeat my beloved hometown team. The atmosphere of an NCAA Southeastern Conference (SEC) football game is like no other in the country, let alone the Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry game between the Dawgs and the Tigers. One of the biggest highlights of the game was the infamous tipped catch that heaved the Tigers over the Dawgs to secure the game. While I was experiencing heartbreak, Jordan-Hare erupted. I had never quite seen anything like that game, and it definitely goes down as one of the most memorable.
3. University of Georgia defeats Georgia Tech 44-42 in 8OT at Sanford Stadium
This one was very special to me because I was visiting home over Thanksgiving break. I had grown up going to lots of Georgia home football games, and I was finally able to have my reunion since the last time I went to high school. I ended up going with my older brother, a Georgia Tech student athlete, so I got to watch the game from the perspective of a Georgia Tech fan. Being able to sit in a section of fans who thought they were going to upset one of the best teams in the nation, to complete heartbreak at the crack of midnight was an experience I will never forget.
2. Georgia defeats Auburn in the 2018 SEC Championship at Mercedes-Benz Stadium
This game marked Georgia’s first SEC championship since the drought from the last one in 2005. The previous stadium that the SEC championship was played in, the Georgia Dome, had been demolished in the same year. It was the official unveiling of the state-of-the-art stadium in Atlanta where the NFL team, Atlanta Falcons, also competed. While it is always a good day when Georgia wins, being able to be one of the first people to experience the new stadium (as well as the cheap concessions) was super cool and special.
1. Georgia defeats Oklahoma in the 2018 Rose Bowl game to advance to the national championship
It would be dumb if I did not put this one at the top of my list. The Rose Bowl, located in Pasadena, Calif., is one of sports’ most renowned stadiums, let alone the most prolific bowl game to play in college football. It was my first time ever going to California and I was fortunate enough to go to one of college football’s most historic games ever. Georgia defeated Oklahoma 54-48 in double overtime in the most fashionable extent. Running back Sony Michel secured the win with an electric touchdown under the lights and surrounded by the mountains as well as getting to see previous Heisman trophy recipient Baker Mayfield. This experience was one that was going to be hard to beat.
