NBA names which of unbeaten Oklahoma City Thunder and Cleveland Cavaliers is #1 in power rankings

All 30 NBA teams have played more than a handful of games this 2024-2025 NBA Season. While some are off to a rough start, others are off to a hot start with two teams being undefeated.

After Monday’s huge slate of games, the NBA has released their latest power rankings. The defending NBA champions in the Boston Celtics (5-1) are listed at No. 3 in the rankings.

The biggest takeaway from the latest power rankings are the positions of the two undefeated teams in the Cleveland Cavaliers (8-0) and the Oklahoma City Thunder (7-0). These are two teams that have a young, but explosive rosters with a superstar.

The latest power rankings have the Thunder ranking at No. 1 followed by the Cavaliers at No. 2. There is a definitive argument for Oklahoma City being rated No. 1, but the same could be said about Cleveland.

Why the Thunder deserve to be No. 1

Oklahoma City is continuing its impressive run from last year’s surprise breakout season. The Thunder already have solid wins over the Denver Nuggets and the Los Angeles Clippers. Four of their seven wins, so far, this season have been on the road.

Not only have the Thunder been winning, but they’ve also been dominating. All seven of their victories this season have been at-least 12 points with an average of 17.4. Their most dominating win was on the road over the Portland Trail Blazers.

Thunder point guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is playing on an MVP-caliber performance by averaging 25.7 points, 6.6 rebounds, 6.9 assists, 1.7 steals and 1.0 blocks per game. Forwards Jalen Williams and Chet Holmgren are also playing at a high-level by averaging more than 17 points per game.

Why the Cavaliers deserve to be No. 1

The Cavaliers have been hit in the past with bad luck with injuries and inconsistencies. Cleveland has accounted for the most wins of all teams this season. The Cavaliers have wins over the New York Knicks on the road, the Los Angeles Lakers and two wins over the Milwaukee Bucks. They have played more efficient opponents to start the seas

They have a dominating win at the Toronto Raptors to start the season. They defeated the Raptors on the road with a 136-106 score, which is a more convincing win than the Thunder have accounted for all season. The Cavaliers do have closer victories than the Thunder, but it shows that they have capable to hold off comebacks.

The Cavaliers have a superstar of their own in shooting guard Donovan Mitchell. In eight games played, Mitchell is averaging 23.1 points, 2.9 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 1.5 steals. They have another high-volume guard in Darius Garland, who is averaging 20.5 points, 2.0 rebounds, 6.5 assists, and 1.0 steals per game. Cleveland might possess one of the most dynamic and explosive guards in the league.
