NBA Power Rankings: Week 16

The Trade Deadline Is Coming, But Who’s On Top Right Now?

It’s power rankings time again, and this week, everything else in the NBA feels like background noise to The Trade.

You can’t escape it. Luka Doncic to the Lakers. Anthony Davis to the Mavericks. The NBA universe has been flipped upside down. If you turn on ESPN right now, there’s probably a 16-way panel discussion breaking down what this means for LeBron’s legacy, the future of the West, and whether Nico Harris has an elaborate plan to buy an island in case this all goes sideways.

But here’s the thing—I’m not factoring that trade into this week’s rankings. Not yet. It’s impossible to know how these teams will look until Luka gets back from his calf injury, and we see what Dallas does with their suddenly wide-open frontcourt. So this week’s rankings are based on what’s happening right now—not on what could happen once the dust settles.

That said, there’s still plenty to dig into. The Cavs are back on top and the Thunder took a minor stumble. The Timberwolves may have let one get away against Washington, but they’re still trending in the right direction. So let’s get to it.

1. Cleveland Cavaliers (40-9) – Last Week’s Ranking: 4

Welcome back to the throne, Cleveland. The Cavs hit a rough patch last week, dropping three straight and looking vulnerable for the first time all season. But just as the doubters started creeping in, they ripped off four straight wins, including a statement blowout of Dallas. With the East in flux, Cleveland looks like the safest bet to hold the No. 1 seed.

2. Oklahoma City Thunder (38-9) – Last Week’s Ranking: 1

The Thunder might have a Dallas problem. They’ve lost three of their last seven games, and two of those have come against the Mavericks, who knocked them out of the 2024 post-season. Even with their personal kryptonite, OKC is still the favorite to come out of the West.

3. New York Knicks (32-17) – Last Week’s Ranking: 3

The Knicks hold steady this week, but that loss to the Lakers stings. Yes, the Lakers were without Anthony Davis, but at that point, LeBron had basically activated “2018 Cavs” mode and was doing everything. The Knicks had no answer.

That said, they’ve been dominant over the past month, and with Jalen Brunson playing like a top-15 guy and Karl-Anthony Towns settling into his new role, they’ve got one of the most balanced rosters in the East. If they stay healthy (always a big if with this team), they could be a serious problem come playoff time.

4. Boston Celtics (35-15) – Last Week’s Ranking: 5

Boston is heating up again after a midseason swoon. The competition hasn’t exactly been murderer’s row (Bulls, Pelicans, Sixers), but wins are wins.

The real test comes Tuesday night when they head to Cleveland for a showdown with the Cavs. That game will tell us whether Boston is back in the driver’s seat in the East, or if they’re just treading water.

5. Memphis Grizzlies (33-16) – Last Week’s Ranking: 6

The Grizzlies are grinding their way up the rankings, winning eight of their last nine and looking like a team that no one is eager to face. The win over Houston was massive, giving them a temporary edge in the race for the No. 2 seed out West.

6. Houston Rockets (32-16) – Last Week’s Ranking: 2

The Rockets got a little too high on themselves after beating the Cavs and Celtics back-to-back. Then they turned around and lost a critical game to the Grizzlies and the freaking Brooklyn Nets at home. That’s why they tumble down to No. 6. You can’t take nights off in this league, and Houston learned that the hard way.

7. Los Angeles Lakers (28-19) – Last Week’s Ranking: 9

They beat the Knicks without AD. They’ve won six of their last eight. And oh yeah, they just landed Luka Doncic. However, the immediate future for the Lakers is still a little murky. Luka’s calf injury means he’s going to be eased into things, and they have zero size in the frontcourt now. LA is going to need to figure that out, but for now, the recent win streak keeps them climbing.

8. Minnesota Timberwolves (27-22) – Last Week’s Ranking: 10

The Wolves went on a five-game heater, knocking off Dallas, Denver, and Phoenix… and then immediately lost to Washington. Normally, a Wizards loss would be an auto-drop in the rankings, but given that the Wolves were missing their top four scorers (Edwards, Randle, Reid, DiVincenzo), they get a pass. If they can bounce back strong in these next few games, they’ll stay in the top 10.

9. Denver Nuggets (30-19) – Last Week’s Ranking: 8

Nikola Jokic remains ridiculous, and the Nuggets ended their three-game slide with wins over Philly and Charlotte. But let’s be honest—this team hasn’t looked right for a while now. They should be beating bad teams convincingly, not scraping by. Denver is still a top-tier team, but they don’t have that same “defending champs” aura right now.

10. Los Angeles Clippers (28-21) – Last Week’s Ranking: 12

The Clippers are officially in mystery box territory. One night, they’re out here beating legit teams. The next, they’re losing to the Toronto Raptors. If they ever figure out how to play with some consistency, they could be scary. But for now, they’re barely hanging onto a top-10 spot.

11. Indiana Pacers (27-20) – Last Week’s Ranking: 11

A three-game win streak keeps them in the top 12. They’re scrappy. They’re fun. They have a shot at winning a first-round series in the playoffs.

12. Phoenix Suns (25-23) – Last Week’s Ranking: Not Ranked

They’ve won four of their last six, and they’re starting to get healthy again. That’s the good news. The bad news? Recent losses to the Timberwolves and the frTrail Blazers. Trade rumors are swirling, and there’s a real chance they make a big move before the deadline. For now, they slide into the last spot.

Falling Out: Milwaukee Bucks (26-21) – Last Week’s Ranking: 7

That’s it for this week. The trade deadline looms, and next week’s rankings could look completely different if another blockbuster drops. Until then, let’s see if the Timberwolves can bounce back and hold their spot in the top 10.
