We’re now a few days into 2025 and the NCAA basketball season just keeps rolling on. With the turning of the calendar, we’re now heading squarely into the meat and potatoes of the basketball year. Conference play has begun in every league around the country, and you can guarantee that plenty of excitement and high-profile matchups will come in the weeks ahead.
Before looking too far forward, we have to consider what we’ve already seen to this point. Nearly two months of play have seen every team in the nation putting their talents to the test. We’ve seen teams that have underwhelmed and others that have really stood out, while coaches, players, and programs alike have elevated themselves to the next level. The big question is how these teams can handle league play now that the pressure is really ramped up.
Each conference is different and it’s clear that leagues like the Big 12 and SEC are many steps ahead of the mid-major leagues. Some of those SEC teams haven’t quite played the level of competition that they’re about to see in recent weeks and nearly every matchup in that league is going to be sensational. At the same time, some teams will have easier times against weaker conferences. Still, we’ll be doing our best to keep comparing these teams, even those about to run fierce league gauntlets.
With that in mind, and with league play barely begun, it’s time for our latest effort in ranking the best teams in the nation. Our updated Top 25 rankings will see a few changes after the first action of the New Year but you can bet there’s a lot of interesting things to come in this sport. We’re doing our best in our deep dive into these teams, considering results both recent and across the whole year, but let’s just get right into those rankings.
