With the first College Football Playoff rankings set to be revealed this Tuesday, the Oregon football team — with an unblemished 9-0 record and one of the best wins in the country over Ohio State — should be well positioned in the inaugural season rankings.
The Ducks (9-0, 6-0 Big Ten) are fresh off another dominant victory, this time over the defending national champion Michigan Wolverines on Saturday.
With the rankings set to give fans a first look at what the committee is thinking, here’s a reminder for how the new College Football Playoff format works.
How many teams in College Football Playoff 2024?
For the first time in its 10-year history, the College Football Playoff will feature 12 teams after having just four since its inception in 2014. The College Football Playoff announced in December 2022 that it would expand and 2024 is the first season under this new format.
How does the College Football Playoff format work?
With 12 participating teams, the top four conference champions will earn an automatic bye in the first round of the new playoff format. The other teams will be seeded in the at-large spots from 5-12, with the higher seeds hosting the lower seeds either on campus or at other sites designated by the higher-seeded institution.
The selection committee will assign the four highest-ranked conference champions to Playoff Quarterfinals hosted by bowls, with the winner of the No. 8/9 matchup playing No. 1, No. 4 playing the winner of No. 5/12, No. 2 playing the winner of No. 7/10, and No. 3 playing the winner of No. 6/11.
The highest seed will receive preferential placement for the Playoff Semifinal bowl assignment, and the national championship will be played in Atlanta in 2024.
